Tonight at Symphony Space was a gift/made me feel like I was high - or was it the adrenaline from watching JDD from fifth row center. She's our Dame (in every sense)...can't she be knighted/alighted. At least not taken for granted. Before "Magical Thinking" she was. Tragedy is the oddest card in the deck because it can shred and transform like you never could imagine. Thank you Joan Didi-Dunne for your tenacity, the courage of your life, and of course your art of the written word. And Griffin...thank you for hanging out with your Aunt Joan tonight, and the documentary in progress.

Joan, PLEASE pick up that black pen (or continue to learn use of the tablet/computer) and keep writing!!! Mrs. Didion Dunne, you're needed.

Time to Get My Didi-on!

My inspiration, Joan Didion (a.k.a. Didi-on), at Symphony Space in two hours. What to ask her...will probably be 2 shy to say anything.

I was led to Joan Didion before I discovered Patti Smith, the former via "Play It As It Lays," the latter within the pages of Creem Magazine circa 1972. Didion was, to me, rock and roll without being about rock and roll. No other writer on my teenage radar had the rhythm down sans pretense. Joan Didion was the exception. She shows me a map of America, a landscape of terrain, personalities, perspective. And that rhythm. I find her utterly irresistable.

Time to tend to minutiae - what to wear, what to write on JD's birthday card (hers is 12/5, mine 12/4), should I pump myself up with caffeine....

Shelagh Delaney (1939-2011)

I was saddened to learn that writer Shelagh Delaney passed on last week. She wrote one of my favorite plays (and subsequent movie), "A Taste of Honey," and the brilliant screenplay for "Dance With a Stranger." You should see both movies immediately and be rewarded with examples of depth of character, smooth narrative flow, and of course the most intense, inspired acting by Miranda Richardson and Rita Tushingham. ["Dance" was about Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in England. Added plus: Rupert Everett.] You can read about Shelagh Delaney here.

"I haven't really spoken about it, but I do have strong feelings about her loss," Faithfull says. "She was an amazing talent. But the music business is a loathesome thing. I don't mean to be too tough about it, but it's true. For anyone creative or sensitive, it can kill. It happened to Cobain and to Elvis, and it happens over and over again."

Having a tough time over Amy Winehouse's death. Here she is so present of mind, and lovely...I just can't believe she is gone. I was always praying for her to get sobriety. And honestly thought she just might pull it off. There is no room or cause for blame on Amy or the people around her. Over the last several years I read that she tried to get clean and succeeded at times. She died too soon, before she had another chance at sobriety. At least that's what I keep thinking and feeling. Sad sad sad. I hate what addiction did to Amy. [I was one of the lucky ones to recover but my own sobriety did not take the first time around.Or the second.] Whatever suffering she endured, at least that is over. Our loss is heaven's gain. Rest yourself sister.xo

I can't remember the last time I saw the vivacious, charming, good soul who is Cherry Vanilla, but at Barnes & Noble Monday evening it felt like she never left New York. There was a shiny black Yamaha piano on the stage; my wish was granted when I heard the straight outta a speakeasy lead-in of "I Know How To Hook" from Cherry's "Bad Girl" album.. And there she was, right on cue to pick up the vocals. Everyone applauded and cheered - this dame was BACK! CV was generous with us: she read excerpts from her new autobio, "Lick Me", read/sang poems, and schmoozed. I think everyone had a great time that nite. Cherry's hair is no longer red, but it is still a shade that's totally unique. It becomes her. Oh, and two more thoughts: 1. She is lovely to look at, and 2. Vanilla is a mensch.More later...

It was Beatlemania for me alloveragain in the guise of Bush Tetras. Ann Magnuson, always gracious and succinct, nailed a perfect intro by including the adjectives "coolest" and "intimidating" before BT lead off with "Boom (in the Night)". The cowbell, the maracas (which sound better as a slide than a real slide), Julia Murphy tranced-out on bass....Pat tosses the maracas down and gets way down with it. She is the white female Hendrix. Always thought so. Dee is pounding away behind everyone, holding the foundation together. "Are you scared?" dares Cynthia, looking ageless with her blonde tresses. "Yeah!" I screamed, because I was transcended to that other place BT's take me when they are "on". Trust me, they were ON last nite at that Mudd Club/Club 57 reunion last evening at The Delancey. I want more. I'm a good addict. Hope I don't have to wait too long. Namaste BT's. [More photographs in a few days. Please stay tuned.]

While watching Chelsea Lately last week I was shocked when I heard Chuy Bravo announce that "Miss Chelsea" would be "on Don King" later that night or the following evening. I can't remember. And I can't blame my mind lapse on too much Belvedere. I DO think that it is the result of too much Chelsea. I am obsessed on a functional level. I'll write again when I define "functional". Well, thank God Chels had had just enough spirit juice (that would be the Belvedere) to correct the little matzoh ball's mind fart. My 3 second fantasy of Chelsea with Don King perplexed me more than my 9th Grade Algebra Regents. I got a 28 on that one. Mindy Brown, who sat next to me in class, got an impressive 29. She was obviously the brains of our little back row Algebra posse.

May Day has come and gone. NYC temperature is anything but Spring-like. The Mets are playing below .500. Rain prevails and does nothing to help my depressive state of mind. I crave the sun, and I crave Season Two of True Blood. WHAT...a conundrum. And what is going on with Chelsea Handler's hair? It's been looking limp and lifeless. Meanwhile, next to Chelsea at the roundtable, Loni Love's do is full and luscious. And over in his private corner, Chuy sits nite after nite looking like Mr. Springtime incarnate in his pastel cap and vest ensembles. Maybe I need to start taking life lessons from the Mexican Little Nugget, and not be captivated by Chelsea's dazzling smile, killer deadpan stare, and boom-shakka-lakka-boom physique. Are we still in the month of May? Damn!

"She'll be back. Trust me," Patty Hewes utters with promise, staring straight ahead behind Oliver Peoples sunglasses. Her last words of Season Two stand still in the air between she and Tom. Broken by a long shot of Patty as she struts her high-powered self to the end of the same pier that ended Season One's finale.

DAMAGES Season Two finale was brilliant, baffling, exhilarating, and exhausting. God, or should I say the FX execs, knows when we will discover whether or not Ellen actually accepts the new job offer; if Wes, after saving Patty's life, has now formed an unholy alliance with her. Of course, Philip Bosco's character from last season was conspicuously absent for the duration of Season Two. And let us not forget his character introduced Ellen to those corrupt Feds.

I hope we don't have to wait until next year for a fresh crop of episodes. Until then, we can always look forward to Glenn Close's gorgeous voice belting out "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Mets home opener. Yay! At Citi Field. Oy vey!

Baseball season is almost here, a little more pep in my steps, but a good nite's sleep still eludes me. What's a girl to do? I hate watching graveyard shift TEE-vee, but am too tired to read. My downfall is going into my red kitchen and raiding the cupboards and fridge. I haven't worn a bathing suit for more summers than I care to admit to. It's a pain in the neck having extra weight on, but I'll keep trying to zip my lip...especially at nite!
I'm continuing to put more photographs on the blog, and other fun stuff like PacMan...an old obsession. Any suggestions or opinions are welcomed. Enjoy!

I am tired and cranky this morning. Probably cranky because I am tired. And probably tired from being sleep deprived. I am tired to the degree that when I look at the word 'tired' I barely recognize it and think it must be mispelld [sic.]. M. Scott Peck wrote: "Life is difficult." I concur. He also felt that "romantic love" is really about dependency. If these two thoughts are put together into our psyche's (sp?), we may as well take a silver bullet to the heart. I agree with Peck, may he rest in peace, about "romantic love". I become spellbound, elevated, like nothing could touch me. It feels so good I want it to last forever. I drink in more by being with her as much as possible, until everything else around me slips away. This becomes my drug of choice; more than gin, wine, heroin, opiated hash; more than anything ever invented or grown by man or woman. It is the most dangerous substance I have ever inhaled. Romantic love can kiss my ass. And that's not me being cynical, just a realist determined to live another joyous day. There. I feel much better now. I think I need my cup of coffee.

I woke late, remembering the documentary on Marc Jacobs-Louis Vuitton that I watched with Mary (Shanley, my LP) at 4:00 this morning. We had both been asleep for one or two hours and did not want to watch any of the hundreds of info-mercials on the TEE-vee. They offer nothing we want, and I resent their airing at a time when most people are awake only because they cannot sleep. They are the vulnerable, the tired, the anxious yearning to go under so they may get a reprieve from whatever it is they are anxious about.
The Jacobs documentary could have benefitted from some editing to help with continuity and capture more of the raw energy pouring out of his chain-smoking soul. He is his own force of nature. Talk about sleep deprivation! I don't know how he functions on such a high level without alcohol or drugs to fuel him, but he does. I loved a particular shot during a show in Paris; in the front row were Catherine Denueve, Uma Thurman sitting next to her, and a few seats away sat Gillian Anderson. Gorgeous women love him. And I love the gorgeous women.
